This and That-Extended Weekend Edition

I'm writing today, but I really don't have that much to report. I am currently in the middle of a long weekend, and I'm loving it. Because I have a lot of personal and vacation time that I need to start using up, I decided to take the day off on Friday. And naturally we have Monday off for the Fourth of July. Actually, you could say that I'm getting a five-day weekend out of this, because I also worked from home on Thursday. Even though I worked the whole day and was really productive, it's almost like a vacation day when you work from home. And I'm proud of myself for not checking my work e-mail all weekend!

For the most part, I've been relaxing all weekend. And with all the free time, I've been able to get in a lot of nice, long walks. I suppose you could say that I'm a little crazy, though, because I'm probably one of the few people who spends a day off walking for an hour then lifting weights for another hour. Oh well, I'll admit to being a little crazy. I'm just happy that I'm getting my little fitness routine back on track and I'm happy that I'm getting my muscles back!

Routine

Several months ago I got into a workout routine and was really dedicated and was actually able to stick to it for a long time—longer than I've been able to in the past. But then things got really busy at work and then I was taken by surprise with a sudden move. With all the craziness going on, I took a few weeks off from my typical workout routine. I was too busy working and too busy packing and just didn't have time to exercise. Besides, I was also carrying heavy boxes up and down three flights of stairs several times a day. So I considered that my workout for about a week.

But now that I've been living in my new place for a little over a month and now that I'm finally settled—for the most part—I think it's time to get back into my workout routine before I start to get a little beer belly. Plus I've been feeling a little tired and lethargic and very lazy and unmotivated, so maybe the workouts will give me a much-needed boost of energy. So, starting tomorrow, I'll be working out and lifting weights again. Yay me!

Workouts Continue

A few weeks ago—maybe it was several weeks ago or even months, I'm losing track of time—I wrote a post about my workouts. Yes, surprisingly, I've kept up with them, and it has possibly been the longest time I've stuck to a workout routine without getting lazy and falling off the wagon. But so far, so good.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm tiny and I'll always be tiny, but I'm stronger than most people would think and I do have some muscle that most people would underestimate. (And, yes, the ego I have now comes from getting teased, picked on, and beat up when I was younger. How much would I love to cross paths now with the guys who picked on me then!) Because I've kept up with my workouts, I've been feeling better and healthier and I've been sleeping better. My clothes are starting to get too tight in the shoulders—thanks to my huge muscles!—but I've always had a hard time getting the right fit in the shoulders with most women's clothes. I might be tiny, but apparently my shoulders are broad compared to most small or petite women. That's why I always loved it when my mom made my clothes, because the clothes actually fit me properly. Oh well.

...this was an incredibly random post...

Feel the Burn

For the past few weeks, I've gotten back into my exercise regimen. Yes, I realize that I go through a phase like this every year, and in the past I've always fallen off the wagon and stopped exercising after a week or so. But, so far, I've been very disciplined and have kept up with my workouts for the past four weeks. I lift weights about four days a week. Because I started lifting weights in high school, my muscles have good memory and are able to get back into shape relatively quickly. Even though I might be sore for the first few days, it's usually not long before I start to feel stronger.

On my "off" days when I'm not lifting weights I either rest or do some other type of exercise. Because I don't have the greatest flexibility or balance, I decided to try my hand at yoga. And, yes, I was also inspired by seeing how great and beautiful some of my friends look as a result of yoga. I wanted to start out slowly and start with some yoga that focused on stretching/flexibility and relaxation. After all the stretching, it feels great to not feel stiff all the time. The relaxation part is also important to me, because I occasionally have problems sleeping and, naturally, I'm often stressed because of work. I'm just following some videos, but after the first "session" I felt really good. I've since tried a few different videos that focused more on balance or strength and endurance. It's surprising how something that looks so simple and easy can really work your muscles and make you feel really sore the next day.

So, after these past few weeks of yoga and working out, I've been feeling really good. And I think that it's something that I'll actually stick to for a change, because it's something that I actually look forward to and I don't see it as something I "have" to do. And, if I may be so egotistical to say so, I think I'm starting to look pretty darn good, too!

Day Off, Day Three

I slept in again this morning and eventually rolled out of bed at about 9:00. I probably could have slept a little bit longer but the birds in my wall were wide awake. If there were eggs in the nest before, I think they finally hatched. The baby birds have been chirping wildly for the past few days and this morning was no exception. Now I definitely have to let them stay in their nest until they are ready to fly. And I am hoping that the wild chirping is because they are being fed. I'd hate to think that another mean, aggressive bird might be trying to take over the nest. So I suppose that I'll just have to live with them a little longer.

Once I was up, I took my shower, then made my breakfast—coffee, juice, and oatmeal. Then I drank more coffee, flipped through the newspaper, and fiddled around on the computer. The weather people have been predicting scattered and isolated rain all weekend, but at about 12:00 the weather was looking pretty nice. So, with the weather being reasonable, I decided to go out for another walk/halfhearted jog, only this time I jogged for a little longer. I came home, stretched, rested, had some lunch, and watched a little TV. Then I got a little bored with TV. (How is it that you can have almost 500 channels and not have anything good to watch? In addition to the cost of expanded cable services, the complete lack of anything good to watch is another reason why I've been thinking about cutting down on some of the services.) So I turned off the TV and decided to read a book instead. Imagine that! At about 5:00 I was hungry and ready for dinner, but being too lazy to cook anything elaborate, I just had a sandwich and some chips. Then I read a little bit more, and by 7:00 I started to hear thunder again. So I put down my book and sat out on the balcony and waited for the storm to come.

The storm seemed really distant at first and all I heard was thunder. I didn't see the lightning and it wasn't raining. But then, after about 30 minutes, I started to see the clouds lit up by lightning and the thunder was getting closer and louder. Some of it was so loud that it seemed to shake my balcony. It was lovely and wonderful. Then the rain finally started to fall, but it didn't last for long. After about 20 minutes I could already see blue skies to the south.

So, again, it was another restful and relaxing day. What is on the agenda for tomorrow? I'm not sure, really. I do need to go grocery shopping, but I expect to do a lot more relaxing.

Day Off, Day Two

Today was my second day off and I started it out perfectly. I slept in and didn't roll out of bed until about 9:00. I started the coffee, then took a long hot shower, and then I was ready for my breakfast—coffee, orange juice, and Eggo waffles. I lounged around for most of the morning, drinking more coffee, and goofing off on the computer. At about 12:00 or 1:00 (I lost track of time!) and with the weather looking beautiful, I felt motivated to move a little bit, so I decided to take a nice long walk. The weather was wonderful—it was about 65 degrees and it was partly cloudy. The walk was brisk, and I even made some halfhearted efforts to jog a few times. The last time I ran seriously was a little over 15 years ago and back then I was living in California at around sea level. Running feels much different 15 years later and a mile higher. But, still, it felt pretty good. Even though I didn't run far or fast, I was proud of the fact that it didn't feel like my heart or lungs were about to explode. It would be nice if I could keep up this walking and halfhearted running routine. I bet I would be feeling better, eating better, and sleeping better. We'll see.

After my walk/halfhearted jog, I came home to rest a bit, then I had to go out to run some errands. Then I came home, relaxed a little bit more, watched some TV, then made my dinner. For most of the day the weather was beautiful. It was cloudy and cooler than the past few days, but it still felt wonderful. Then at about 7:30 it started to rain. Because my balcony is closed-in, I can sit on the balcony and enjoy the rain without getting wet. The rain was falling really hard, and then came the lightning and thunder. When I was younger, I used to be terrified of thunderstorms, but now I absolutely love them. We had a lot of lightning tonight and there was a steady rumble and crash of thunder. It was wonderful.

The storm lasted for about an hour, and now things are calm and quiet. You can feel the humidity in the air, and you can smell the wet grass and trees and leaves. So now I am back inside, and, with the exception of taking a moment to write this post, I'm sipping some cognac and relaxing. It's a wonderful and beautiful evening.

This and That

Walking: I mentioned in my previous posts that I have been taking long—and some short—walks around my neighborhood. On Monday, in spite of being utterly exhausted after work, I forced myself to take another walk "around the block." This time when I passed the park near my apartment complex—and I now know that it is called Gunbarrel Commons Park—I noticed that there seem to be some exercise stations in this park. These are stations where you can do some exercises, like pull ups, step ups, triceps dips, and various other exercises. I was somewhat in a hurry to get back home to cook my dinner because I was starving, but I think that running this park and doing the exercise circuit might be a fun thing to do sometime. So I kept walking, and even though I was exhausted when I started my walk, I felt about 100% better by the time I got home. Unfortunately I didn't walk yesterday because I had to do some shopping after work, then I was eager to watch Obama's press conference. And I didn't walk today because there is a snowstorm approaching, and it's pretty cold and windy right now. But I've been enjoying these walks, and feel bad and guilty when I don't/can't walk. So, I think that I'll start walking again in a few days when we get nicer weather.

Weather: as I mentioned above, the weather is changing right now. For the past few weeks it has felt like spring. It's been sunny and warm, but we're expecting snow tonight. The reports coming from the different news sources vary. Some say we'll get a few inches, others say we'll get a foot, and yet others say we'll get over fifteen inches. So tomorrow we could have anything from a dusting to a blizzard. You never know in Colorado. It is safe to say that everyone in the office is hoping for a big snowstorm so that the office will be closed for the day.

Stupid questions: There is such a thing as a stupid question. During the presidential news conference last night, one of the questions was something along the lines of "why haven't you asked for something specific that the public should be sacrificing to participate in this economic recovery?" Um, sacrifice? So, losing jobs, homes, taking pay cuts, not getting raises, bonuses, 401k matches, losing health care and other things like that are not considered enough of a sacrifice?

Impulse buys: I think that Jello pudding cups—both chocolate and vanilla flavors—could possibly be the most impulsive impulse buy I've had to date. I suppose that is why they say make a shopping list and stick with it!

Walking and Exploring

The weather is absolutely beautiful again, so I thought I'd take another walk. But, instead of walking around Twin Lakes again, I decided to explore the area closer to home. Yes, I've been living in my new apartment for almost 10 months, but I really haven't explored the area that much other than by driving to and fro in my car. So once again I strapped on my walking shoes and out I went.

As I was walking, I discovered a huge park that is pretty close to my apartment. There are lots of open gassy spots, picnic tables, basketball courts, and swings, slides, and jungle gyms for the kids. I went past the park and kept on walking. I've always known that I'm really close to the Celestial Seasonings factory, but I guess I never realized how close I really was. It is only about half a mile away. I continued walking "around the block" and found some really nice areas with great, clear views of the mountains. I have a feeling that these spots could turn into some excellent locations for taking pictures of the mountains, sunsets, storms, or whatever. I continued my tour around the block, but came to the less exciting areas with the office park on one side of me and apartments and condos (but nice apartments and condos) on the other side of me. Eventually, and somewhat too soon, I was back at my apartment.

The walk was about one mile long. I was able to see some nice sights and get in a little bit of exercise, too. Even though I'm a big wanderer and love taking in beautiful scenery, I'm also in this for the exercise. When I came to Colorado for grad school, my first apartment was about a mile and a half from my front door to our department office. Because I was so close, I naturally walked that distance every day. And I walked that distance no matter the weather—100 degrees, rain, snow, 50 mile per hour winds, and, yes, sometimes uphill, all while carrying a backpack full of books! Back then I was really healthy and in really good shape. I had a hearty appetite and I slept well. That all changed once I graduated and entered the working world. Now I spend 8–10 hours a day doing nothing but sitting and reading. And by the end of the day I'm usually too tired to do anything that requires any real effort or exertion. But then my attitude suddenly changed. A few days ago a friend told me that she is training for a half marathon, and naturally I thought that her goal was amazing and impressive. That is when it hit me that I need to get out more and move some more. I'm not going to be running a half marathon any time soon, but I just feel the need to move. I think it will be good for both my health and my sanity.

This and That Weekend Edition

This weekend has been relatively quiet. I had grand intentions of waking up early on Saturday to run some errands and do some shopping so that I could go on a little hike later in the day. My alarm went off at 8:00, and I turned it off thinking that I would just rest my eyes for another ten or twenty minutes. When I finally opened up my eyes again and looked at the alarm clock it was noon. I guess my body was telling me something...

The week at work was busy again, and I've been putting in more long hours. Unfortunately I have a feeling that things are going to get worse over these next three weeks. Maybe things will calm down in May, but I doubt it will calm down that much. The fact that my body just gave up on Saturday morning was a sign that I needed more rest...or less stress. So rather than go on a hike, I decided to just take it easy on Saturday. My body was too tired and my head was too groggy.

On a bright note, I've been keeping up with my workout routines. I worked out only three days, but I've been trying to pick up the intensity so that I can start working out at least five days a week. My muscles are still sore, but I guess that's a good thing. Now, the only thing I need to do is improve my eating habits. Because things have been so busy at work and because I've been working such late hours, when I get home I'm usually not in the mood to cook. So I've been picking up food on the way home. I try to be healthy when I take food home with me, so I've been getting pasta and salads from Noodles or tacos, beans, and rice from Wahoo's. But I suppose that it would be better (and cheaper) if I cooked my own meals. So I have to either force myself to cook or force myself to leave the office at a reasonable hour! I'm cooking up a nice dinner for myself tonight, so we'll see how long it last this week.

I brought a lot of work home with me this weekend, but so far I haven't touched it. I was also planning on doing my taxes this weekend, but I haven't touched that either. Right now I'm not feeling motivated to do anything that requires work and a lot of thinking...

Pain...I'm in Pain...

So, I am on another health kick again. The inspiration for this latest health kick is a friend who recently (on a whim) woke up one morning and decided to run a 7K race in Denver on St. Patrick's Day weekend. Hearing that story and the fact that it was something she randomly decided to do, I was inspired to try to get back into shape and to exercise more. I considered joining a gym or the YMCA or the Recreation Center in Boulder, but it costs over $500 a year to join those places. That amounts to anywhere between $40 and $50 a month. To me, that sounds like a lot of money. Then again, I'm also the type of person who will spend $40 on a good bottle of Cognac, but whatever. So, for now, I've decided to not join a gym or other such establishment, and I've decided to work out at home instead.

I've always liked lifting weights, so that's what I'm doing. I worked out on Sunday, and I'm feeling pretty sore today. Okay, I'm really sore. I'm mostly sore in my legs. My upper body has always been fairly strong and resilient, but my legs have always been the weaker parts of my body. For some reason--probably because I'm my father's daughter and can't "ease" into things--I sort of overdid it. I was doing lunges and squats with weights, and then I got the crazy idea to jump rope between sets because I thought it would be a good to get a little cardio workout between sets. My legs really hurt. Today at work, I wanted to go down to the downstairs kitchen to get some root beer. It sorta hurt to walk down the stairs. With each step I took, it felt like someone was whacking me on my thighs with a baseball bat. I was tempted to take the elevator back up to the second floor but decided not to because that would be sort of pathetic.

Anyway, in a nutshell, I'm in pain, but I rested yesterday and plan on working out again tonight. I have to keep working my muscles if they are going to get stronger, and hopefully the more I work out the less sore I'll get in the future. But, man, I hurt...
